Description of Duties
A Practice Nurse, also known as a General Practice Nurse (GPN), provides a wide range of primary care services within a general practice setting, working as part of a multidisciplinary team. Their role encompasses patient assessment, treatment, education, and care coordination, contributing to the overall health and well-being of the practice population. Key Responsibilities: Patient Assessment & Care: Practice nurses conduct comprehensive health assessments, take patient histories, and monitor vital signs. Immunizations & Vaccinations: They administer childhood and travel immunizations, and stay updated on evolving vaccination protocols. Chronic Disease Management: Practice nurses play a crucial role in managing chronic conditions like diabetes, asthma, and COPD through monitoring, education, and support. Wound Care: They provide wound care services, including dressing changes, wound assessment, and infection control. Health Promotion & Education: Practice nurses educate patients on various health topics, promoting healthy lifestyles and preventative care. Care Coordination: They coordinate patient care, liaising with other healthcare professionals, specialists, and community services as needed. Minor Surgical Procedures: Some practice nurses assist with or perform minor surgical procedures, such as removing stitches or moles. Record Keeping & Documentation: They maintain accurate patient records and ensure proper documentation of all care provided. Medication Management: Practice nurses may administer medications, educate patients on medication usage, and manage medication supplies. Infection Control: They adhere to strict infection control protocols to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff. Triage: Practice nurses assess the urgency of patient needs and prioritize appointments accordingly. Training & Mentoring: Some practice nurses may be involved in training and mentoring other healthcare staff.
Qualifications
Registered Nurse (RN) Qualification: A nursing degree and registration with the relevant nursing regulatory body are essential. Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills are needed to interact with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals. Clinical Skills: Proficiency in a range of clinical skills, including wound care, immunization administration, and vital sign monitoring. Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking: The ability to assess patient needs, make appropriate decisions, and solve problems independently. Organizational & Time Management Skills: Practice nurses often manage multiple patients and tasks simultaneously. Adaptability & Flexibility: The ability to adapt to changing situations and work in a fast-paced environment. Empathy & Compassion: A caring and compassionate approach to patient care is crucial.
